Shobha Deepak Singh was born in October 1943 and had her schooling at Modern School, New Delhi. She graduated in Economic (Hons.) from Delhi University in 1963.
She joined DCM as a Management Trainee in 1964 and was subsequently involved in marketing and advertising activities of some of the company’s product lines. She left DCM after her marriage in 1967.
She joined Bharatiya Kala Kendra in 1968 and served as the first Manager of Kamani Auditorium. She subsequently became involved in the performing side of the Kendra’s activities and went on to specialize in costumes and ornaments design- a field in which she became a trail blazer. Later on, she took over the task of script writing and directing of the Kendra’s ballets. During the past two decades she has produced, directed and designed costumes for outstanding ballets and dance dramas of the institute.
In 1977, she also completed her degree in “Bachelor of Performing Arts”.
In 1992, she joined the Direction Course of Living Theatre under the tutelage of Mr. E. Alkazi. She received her diploma in theatre direction in 1996. During her tenure with Living Theatre, she received training in allied arts such as light and set design and was responsible for the music of several plays such as Virasat, Royal Hunt of the Sun, Three Sisters, Three Greek Tragedies, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Death of a Salesman. She also worked with Mr. Alkazi, as an Assistant Director for the latter four productions.
As the Director of the Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra she has overall administration responsibility of all the Kendra’s activities and is also its artistic director.
She has a natural flair for photography. In 1996, her theatrical photographs were displayed under the auspices of ART HERITAGE. On the occasion of International Woman’s Day, she was asked to present a photography exhibition on “Woman’s in performing arts’ at the India Habitat Centre. Her photographs of performing arts were displayed at Bombay. She has a collection of over 1, 00,000 personalities in performing arts and her photographs have been extensively used by leading dailies and magazines. Her most recent exhibition was in Nov 2003 curated by E Alkazi and on Mallvika Sarukai by Francise Wakziarg.
Shobha Deepak Singh has the ardent believer in documentation towards this end she has build up repository at the Kendra of Audio, Video and Books.
Shobha Deepak Singh has panache for writing and has contributed articles for leading newspapers and magazines.
Shobha Deepak Singh has studied dance from Shambhu Maharaj and Birju Maharaj and Music from Biswajeet Roy Chowdhary and Amjad Ali Khan.
For over two decades, Shobha Deepak Singh has designed costumes and directed the Kendra’s flagship productions: Ram, Krishna. Her contribution towards revival of Mayurbhanj Chhau a traditional dance form from Orissa has been exemplary.
Shobha Deepak Singh has completed 40 years in the field of Costume Design, Direction, Choreography and Management of Arts.
She a member of the National Culture Fund (Government of India) and of the Sahitya Kala Parishad (Institute of Performing Arts, Government of Delhi).
She runs an exclusive boutique ‘Vastrashobha’ comprising of heritage and exclusive saris , borders and stoles and veils. She has recently launched a jewellery range called ‘Abhooshan’.
In recognition of her contribution to the performing arts, the President of India awarded her the Padmashri in 1999.
She is married with a daughter.
