SUMITRA CHARAT RAM AWARD FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra has completed more than six decades of dedicated work in promoting and propagating various forms of Indian Classical Music and Dance. The Kendra, which started in a small way in 1952, has during the past 65 years emerged as one of the leading cultural organizations of the country.

 

A large part of the Kendra’s success is attributable to the untiring work, inspiration and guidance provided by its Founder Smt. Sumitra Charat Ram. To recognize her invaluable contribution, the Kendra has instituted an annual Award in her name.

 

The salient features of the Sumitra Charat Ram Award are as follows:

 

1. NAME OF THE AWARD

 

The Award is known as the ‘SUMITRA CHARAT RAM AWARD for Lifetime Achievement.

 

2. PRESENTATION OF AWARD

 

The Presentation Ceremony takes place every year at Kamani Auditorium on 17th November on the occasion of the birthday of Smt. Sumitra Charat Ram.

 

3. THE AWARD

 

The Award carries a purse of Rs.2,00,000/- a Citation, a Shawl and a Silver Plaque.

 

The cash value of the Award may be enhanced from time to time as may be felt appropriate by the Governing Council.

 

4. CRITERIA OF AWARD

 

The Award is given to individuals, who have excelled in the field of Indian Classical Dance and Music or other disciplines of Indian Art and Culture including theatre and who had a significant impact in promoting his / her particular art form.

 

5. ELIGIBILITY

 

  1. The Award is open to persons of all nationalities, race, caste, religion or creed and is gender neutral.
  2. There is no lower or upper age limit for nominations for the Award
  3. The most important criteria for selecting the Awardee is the Individuals ‘s achievements in his / her professional career during the last 15 years prior to the date of consideration for the Award.
  4. An Association, Institution or Organisation is not eligible for the Award.

 

RECIPIENTS OF SCR AWARD (2010 - 2016)

The prestigious Sumitra Charat Ram Award for Lifetime Achievement was first instituted in 2010 and was presented to Pt. Birju Maharaj, the doyen of Kathak Dance on 21st February 2011. In the subsequent years, the Award has been given to:

 

Smt. Kishori Amonkar – Hindustani Vocal Music

Shri Mayadhar Raut – Odissi Dance

Smt. Kumudini Lakhia – Kathak Dance

Pt. Jasraj – Hindustani Vocal Music

Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia – Hindustani Instrumental Music (Flute)

Ms. Marcela Diez, Director General, Cervantino International Festival, Mexico accompanied by Ms. Mariana Aymerich Ordonez, PR Director of the Festival visited Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and met the Director and Vice-Chairperson Smt. Shobha Deepak Singh on Tuesday, 5th December 2017. The visit was held under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR's) 'Distinguished Visitors Programme 2017-18'. Besides holding discussions on matters of mutual interest, the visitors also witnessed a brief demonstration of dance by the artists and students of the Kendra.

 

Under the Kendra's Jhankar series of Music and Dance presentations, a Sarod recital by the Kendra's Senior Guru and eminent musician Shri Biswajit Roy Chowdhury is being held on Saturday the 9th December 2017 at 5.30 p.m.. The programme will be organised in the 'baithak' style in the newly refurbished basement hall of the Kendra. A few chairs, however, will also be kept for the elderly. The programme is particularly meant for serious 'rasikas' and young professional artists of Hindustani Classical Music. Those interested are most welcome.
